Yoni the YonoSIM mascot with a world map — choosing the best eSIM for international travel in 2026

Best eSIM for International Travel 2026: Buy Regional, Not Global (10 GB for US$10.99 vs US$63.99)

For most international trips a regional eSIM beats a global one: on 4 November 2026, 10 GB for 30 days cost US$10.99 on our 33-country Europe plan and US$63.99 on our 117-country global plan. Buy global only when one trip crosses continents — and even then, compare it with two regional plans before you pay.

Summary

My advice for most international trips: buy a regional eSIM, not a global one. When I checked our catalogue on 4 November 2026, 10 GB for 30 days cost US$10.99 on our 33-country Europe plan and US$63.99 on our 117-country global plan. That is almost six times the price for countries you will never visit. Buy global only when one trip really does cross continents, and even then, price two regional plans first.

How international eSIMs work in 2026

A travel eSIM doesn’t have a network of its own. It roams onto local carriers under wholesale agreements, so a “Europe” or “global” plan is really a list of countries where those agreements exist. Every extra country adds wholesale cost, which is why price climbs with coverage. Two things follow. First, the country list is the product: two plans called “Europe” can differ by five countries. Second, a global plan charges you for the widest list there is, whether or not your trip needs it.

That gap is not specific to us. On esimDB’s global listings (checked 4 November 2026), 10 GB of global data cost about US$45 for 30 days at Saily, US$57 for 180 days at Airalo and US$62 for 30 days at Nomad. Regional Europe and Asia plans cost a fraction of that at every brand. Our own global plan is the most expensive of those four at 10 GB. If you truly need one global eSIM, Saily’s is cheaper than ours, and I would buy theirs.

Regional vs global: what 10 GB costs

These rows come live from our catalogue. Each one is the cheapest 10 GB / 30-day plan that covers that region’s core countries. The last column lists notable countries that plan leaves out.

Best pick for your trip type

Europe, any number of countries: a Europe regional plan. Check the list for France, Switzerland and Türkiye before you pay, and buy a Türkiye plan separately if Istanbul is on the route. EU residents travelling inside the EU can usually skip the eSIM entirely: the EU’s Roam Like at Home rules run until 2032.

Southeast and East Asia: an Asia regional plan covers Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam together. Mainland China and Singapore need checking plan by plan; for China, a China plan is the safer buy. USA, Canada and Mexico: one North America plan. Round-the-world or three continents: this is the case a global plan is built for. Still, add up the regional plans for your actual route first. Two regional plans plus a few days on Wi-Fi often come in under one global plan.

FAQ

QIs a global eSIM worth it for international travel?

AUsually not. A global eSIM only pays off when a single trip crosses continents. On 4 November 2026, 10 GB for 30 days cost US$10.99 on YonoSIM's 33-country Europe plan and US$63.99 on its 117-country global plan — almost six times more for coverage most trips never use. If your trip stays in one region, buy that region's plan. If it spans two regions, two regional plans are usually still cheaper than one global plan.

QWhich eSIM is best for a multi-country trip?

AA regional plan that names every country on your route. Europe plans cover 30 to 40 countries, but read the list: the cheapest Europe plans in our catalogue leave out Türkiye, and some leave out France. Asia plans vary more — our 14-country Asia plan covers Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, but not mainland China or Singapore. The plan's country list matters more than the brand.

QHow much data do I need for an international trip?

AFor maps, messaging, ride-hailing and some social media, plan on about 1 GB every two to three days, so roughly 5 GB for a week and 10 GB for two to four weeks. Add more if you hotspot a laptop, upload video or stream on trains. Hotel and café Wi-Fi covers most big downloads.

QDo I need an eSIM if I live in the EU and travel inside the EU?

AUsually not. Under the EU's Roam Like at Home rules, which run until 2032, an EU mobile plan works across the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway at domestic prices, subject to your carrier's fair-use policy. A travel eSIM makes sense for EU residents when they leave that zone — the UK, Switzerland, Türkiye and the Balkans outside the EU are common surprises.

Bottom line

For most international trips, buy the regional eSIM for the region you are visiting, not a global one. On 4 November 2026, 10 GB for 30 days cost US$10.99 on our 33-country Europe plan and US$63.99 on our 117-country global plan. Read the plan’s country list before you pay. Buy global only when one trip crosses three continents.
