Summary

Every major travel eSIM store will refund an unused plan. The differences are in how long you have, what you have to do to trigger the refund, whether you get cash back or store credit, and whether installing the eSIM on your device kills the refund right. This is the head-to-head comparison of Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, and YonoSIM— quoted from each provider's own published policy so you can verify before you buy. The short version: YonoSIM is the only one that auto-refunds if you never use the data, and it's the only one that treats install-but-no-data-used as still refundable.

The comparison table

Here is what each provider actually promises, side by side. Every row is a real policy dimension travelers ask about — the length of the window, whether activation kills the refund, what payout method you get, and whether anyone will do it for you if you forget.

The one dimension nobody else competes on

Every row above matters, but one row is doing most of the work: automatic refund. YonoSIM is the only major travel eSIM store where a customer who never uses the data doesn't have to do anything to get their money back. Every other provider counts on the fact that most customers won't remember, won't bother, or won't have the English fluency to argue their case in a support ticket. That's not a technical difference — it's a business model difference. The industry treats support-ticket walls as a margin-preservation tool. We think that's a bad long-term trade and built the daily auto-refund sweep to prove it.

Read the full 30-day auto-refund explainer for the actual mechanism — Stripe order filter, network-provider usage check, cancel-before-refund order-of-operations, warm confirmation email — and why eSIMs are notoriously hard to refund (and how we fixed it) for the technical backstory.

How to pick a refund policy that matches your trip

Different trips need different policies. A quick decision tree:

  • One-off trip, want your money back if it doesn't work: YonoSIM. Longest window that treats install-but-no-use as refundable, cash back to your card, auto-refund if you forget.
  • Multi-country regular who'll travel again in 3 months: Airalo's Airmoney credit is genuinely useful because you'll spend it on the next trip. Airalo's partial-refund clause is also a real upside if you activate then abandon.
  • Booking a plan months ahead for a trip you might not take: Holafly. 6-month window is the industry maximum for unactivated plans, and the $3.50 admin fee is worth it if you paid $50+ for a plan you never used.
  • Willing to write a support ticket, want a real refund: Saily or Nomad. Both have reasonable 30-day windows and refund to the original payment method; both require the customer to initiate.
  • Trip includes Canada:Do NOT count on any refund from YonoSIM — Canadian plans are final sale. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, and Nomad don't disclose a Canadian carve-out; check their current policy before you buy.

FAQ

QWhich travel eSIM has the best refund policy in 2026?

AYonoSIM has the best refund policy for unused plans because it is the only major travel eSIM that refunds automatically — a daily sweep detects zero data usage at 30 days and refunds the original card without any support ticket, form, or reason drop-down. Every other major provider (Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad) will refund an unused plan, but the customer has to initiate the request. YonoSIM's one exclusion is Canadian plans, which are final sale and disclosed with a pre-checkout pop-up.

QDo any eSIM providers refund automatically without asking?

AAs of 2026-07-25, YonoSIM is the only travel eSIM store we can find that runs an automatic refund. A scheduled job sweeps orders daily; any Stripe-paid plan whose network profile still shows zero data usage at 30 days from purchase is cancelled with the network provider and refunded to the original card, and the customer receives a confirmation email. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, and Nomad all require the customer to open a support ticket, an in-app form, or a chat conversation to receive a refund on an unused plan.

QWhat is the longest eSIM refund window?

AHolafly offers the longest window at up to 6 months from purchase for unactivated plans, but requires you to email support and may charge a $3.50 USD administrative fee. YonoSIM and Saily both offer 30 days; Nomad offers 30 days. Airalo has the shortest window at 14 days from purchase, and Airalo's clock stops the moment the eSIM is activated on your device — a distinction that catches many first-time buyers off guard.

QDo eSIM providers refund to my original card or as store credit?

AIt depends on the provider and the refund reason. YonoSIM always refunds to your original payment method — no store credit, no in-app currency. Holafly, Saily, and Nomad typically refund to the original payment method, though Nomad may default to Nomad Points and Saily takes up to 5 working days to decide. Airalo is the outlier: for the two most common change-of-plans reasons ('Wrong purchase' and 'Plans changed'), Airmoney store credit is the only option — cash refunds are limited to installation issues or provider-side failures.

QWhat happens to my refund if I already installed the eSIM but never used data?

AThis is the single most important distinction across the industry. YonoSIM treats install-but-no-data-used as still eligible for a full refund — only data consumption disqualifies. Airalo's refund window ends the moment you activate the eSIM on your device. Holafly and Saily generally require the eSIM to be unactivated. Nomad requires proof of non-usage. If you tend to install eSIMs early to test compatibility, YonoSIM is the only major provider whose policy accommodates that habit without penalty.

Bottom line

Every major travel eSIM store will refund an unused plan. Only YonoSIM will do it without asking. If you buy an eSIM and your trip changes, your device wasn't compatible, or you never figured out data roaming, four out of five providers count on you to notice, remember, and file a request. We think that's the wrong bet. Buy without the buy-then-argue anxiety — and if you don't use it, we'll take care of it.
